How --and why-- to tell your story
You can't just jump right into making a video. Not only do you need to plan and outline through the use of storyboards, you first need to take some time, reflect, and ask yourself WHY?
If you do not have answers to those questions, you are not ready to begin planning, and certainly not ready to pick up a camera. Be serious with yourself here, because the WHY shouldn't be a fast answer. And not a simple answer either....like "because it's funny" or "because I think it's a good story." Those are not good enough answers. Think about your favorite movies, TV episodes, or even commercials--WHY did they create them and tell the "story"?
- Why am I telling this story?
- Why am I sharing this message?
- Why do I want people to watch this?
- Why will anyone WANT to watch it?

Short film VS. YOUTUBE/video clip
So, you are thinking about your favorite shows or movies. What makes for a good story?
Another thing to understand and recognize in all stories is the basic "Thee Act Structure." Watch the helpful films below, or click here if you prefer to read about it.

"But I don't really want to make a movie or short film. I want to make a viral video, something for YouTube that lots of people will share."
Guess what? You still need to have a point in making the video. You STILL need to have a "WHY" or it won't be share-worthy! And take a hint from the box above ("What Makes a Good Short Film") by avoiding every kids favorite thing to do--exact copying of trends! Try a different angle or approach. Change it up, and make it better! |
